1964 RCA CTC-15 Beauchamp

I've always got projects in progress.  Many of them go on for some time.  This project, a 1964 RCA CTC-15 Beauchamp, has been on hold for at least a year.  I've toyed with it on and off during that time, but really got into it these past few weeks.

This set was being pieced together using three similar sets.  The chassis was pulled from a "plain-jane" set.  It's main repair was replacing the original flyback transformer.  I got a new replacement part from Moyer's Electronics in Sunbury, PA.  It's amazing that they have so many parts for vintage TV's still in stock!

The 21FBP22 picture tube came from another set.  It was rebuilt by Video Display Corporation in Dallas.

The Beauchamp cabinet came from a set that I found at a local TV shop.  The chassis in this set was in too poor of condition to try repairing, so, I've saved it for parts.  The cabinet was in poor condition as well, so, I stripped and refinished it with very nice results.

I got the set together and running on Nov. 8, 2004.

In the beginning...

This was the cabinet before I started this project.  I had already pulled the chassis and tube, so, the cabinet was nothing more than a home for a bunch of junk.  As you can see, it ain't pretty!

Stripping...

Here it is being stripped.  Personally, I've never liked doing woodwork.  Refinishing can take several days of work.  The humidity from living on the Texas Gulf Coast doesn't help matters much, either!  However, I was very pleased with the way the cabinet turned out.

Putting it back together...

Here is a shot of the donor CTC-15 chassis and rebuilt CRT installed.  This 23-tube chassis consumes 315 watts (roughly twice what a modern set would use).   This will help keep the living room warm in the winter!  Note the new flyback transformer in the bottom right of the photo.

Finished Product!

It finally looks like a television!  It has a fresh new look and is now ready for use!  Originally, this particular model retailed for $600.00 in 1964.

Convergence

The convergence set up came out really good.  It's almost near perfect.  Only the very outer half-inch edges are off.

Screen shots...

Here she is in her moment of glory (the TV i mean).  Seeing the picture in person is far better than I can get in a photo.

Today's Weather

This set makes a great picture... especially considering that the chassis' only repairs involved a new flyback and swapping out the high voltage tubes.  All of the other tubes on the chassis were the ones that came with it.  Having the new picture tube makes a huge difference!
